First Grade Lessons
Sharing the Planet
Students have been focusing on the relationship between living things and the environment. They are focusing on the needs of living things and comparing different organisms.They will study about different animals and how they adapt for changes in their environment. They will use the information they collect to design a cheetah adapted to ensure its survival.
Comparing And Measuring
Students will explore units of measurement while comparing various objects.
How We Express Ourselves
Students will explore the lives of children's authors Beatrix Potter and Bernd and Susan Richter. Students will go on a virtual field trip to the author's home and discuss how the author's lifestyle helps inspire the stories they write. Students will then create their own original story from an experience they have had.
Hour of Code
Students will be introduce to techniques for writing their own computer programs. They will learn the basic concepts of Computer Science with drag and drop programming. This is a game-like, self-directed tutorial where students will learn repeat-loops, conditionals, and basic algorithms.
How the World Works
Students are exploring scientific concepts of friction. They are focusing on Forces and Movement as well as Forces in Action. They will use the BBC link below to experiment with these concepts. Once students have completed their experiments, they will use what they have learned to construct and design a roller coaster.
Students will use follow Clicky through NetSmartz to learn about internet safety. They will choose a video and play interactive activities on NetSmartz to learn more about staying safe while using the internet. Students will share what they learned with the class.
Who We Are
Students have been learning about how family relationships and experiences influence who we are. Students will use Kerpoof! to create a digital celebration/holiday card for a "friend" of a different culture. Students will research supplemental information about the celebration they have chosen using PebbleGo.
How We Organize Ourselves
Students are developing their understanding of community needs. They will work with a partner to complete ten units using BrainPOP Jr. They will focus on how and why certain goods/services are required in various types of communities and how these goods/services are achieved. Each section builds to help guide students understanding of urban, suburban, and rural communities.
